Gastroscopy (OGD)

Visualizing Your Digestive Health—Accurate Diagnosis and Treatment from Esophagus to Stomach for Lasting Relief and Wellness.

A gastroscopy (also called an upper endoscopy) is a procedure used to examine the inside of your oesophagus (gullet), stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum). It helps us investigate symptoms such as heartburn, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, anaemia, or unexplained weight loss.

During the Procedure

The procedure is done using a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end, which is gently passed through the mouth and down into the stomach. It usually takes just a few minutes.

To keep you comfortable, you will be offered either:

  • Sedation – a light sedative through a small needle in your arm to help you relax (you’ll need someone to take you home afterward), or
  • Local anaesthetic throat spray – which numbs your throat but lets you stay fully awake and recover quickly.

You’ll be able to discuss your preference beforehand, and we’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.
